在2014年五月的《经济学人》看到的一句话，不太理解，望高人见教。

百度只搜到What had begun as good-natured teasing quickly gave way to recriminations as the lost hikers blamed one another for their predicament.

但感觉what had begun as…as…在这两句话中的用法不同，希望有人指点我一下，谢谢：P

    并不是你想象中那么断句，是：

    What had begun as the imposition of martial law on May 20th／grew into a full-blown coup by the army／as The Economist went to press.最后一个as只表示伴随的时间。这样懂了吗？
